Everything a contractor, homeowner, fleet operator, or buyer needs to scope, plan, and confidently commission custom metal work in South Florida, before you ever pick up the phone.
Whether you're comparing materials, scoping a job, or planning a fleet build, these three guides answer the questions we get asked every week.
The single most common question we get before a quote: "Which metal should I use?" The honest answer depends on your environment, load requirements, finish preferences, and total budget. This guide walks through each scenario.
| Material | Best For | Cost | Corrosion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild Steel | Interior, structural, painted | $ | Needs coating |
| Stainless 304 | Exterior, food, coastal | $$$ | Excellent |
| Stainless 316 | Marine, saltwater exposure | $$$$ | Superior |
| Aluminum | Light structures, transport | $$ | Good |
South Florida rule of thumb: If your installation is within a mile of the water or exposed to salt air year-round, always specify 316 stainless or aluminum. Mild steel powder-coated is fine for interior or sheltered exterior work where the coating stays intact.
A well-scoped request gets a faster, more accurate quote. Here's exactly what we need from you, and why each piece matters.
Custom van fabrication is one of the most spec-driven projects we handle. Lead time, compliance, weight distribution, and trade workflow all factor in. Here's how to plan it right the first time.
List every tool, part, and consumable a tech needs per job. Separate high-access items (front of van, driver-side) from less-frequent stock. This determines rack placement before fabrication starts.
Provide year, make, model, and roof height (standard vs. high-roof). Transit, Sprinter, ProMaster, and NV all have different cargo bay dimensions. We measure in-person for production builds.
Aluminum shelving and ladder racks reduce payload penalty vs. steel. For Florida climate, powder-coated aluminum resists humidity and salt corrosion without rusting the van floor over time.
Single-van builds typically complete in 2–4 weeks from approved spec. Fleet builds (5+ vans) are staggered. Schedule installs around your dispatch calendar, vans are typically out of service 1–3 days.
Practical frameworks for the four most common project types we build in South Florida. Use these before reaching out, or share them with your contractor or GC.
Handrails, pool fencing, gates, staircases, and decorative features for homeowners and residential contractors.
Structural steel, commercial railings, metal cladding, signage, and custom features for GCs, developers, and commercial clients.

Three recent projects that illustrate how we approach different fabrication challenges, what the client needed, what we built, and why it worked.
Challenge: Homeowner needed a custom handrail to match existing architectural ironwork, no standard catalog product fit the profile or spacing. GC had a two-week window before finish flooring install.
Solution: Measured on-site, fabricated custom flat bar balusters and a square-profile top rail, powder-coated gloss black. Installed in a single day before flooring crew arrived.
View Residential Portfolio →Challenge: A tenant build-out in a South Florida retail strip required custom metal features, a reception counter frame, floating shelving brackets, and entry gate, all on a 3-week GC timeline.
Solution: Shop-fabricated all three elements in parallel, delivered and installed in two site visits. Coordinated with the electrical sub for counter lighting integration.
View Commercial Portfolio →Challenge: An HVAC company expanding its fleet needed five Ford Transit vans upfitted with matching aluminum shelving, partitions, and roof-mounted ladder racks, without grounding the whole fleet at once.
Solution: Prefabricated all five interiors simultaneously, installed in a staggered 10-day window (one van at a time). All units matched exactly. Fleet was back at full capacity within two weeks.

FBC Chapter 10 governs guards and handrails for stairs, ramps, elevated walkways, and open-sided floors. Key thresholds for residential and commercial occupancies:
Permit requirements vary by county and municipality. General thresholds that typically trigger permit review in South Florida:
Each South Florida county has additional amendments and AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) requirements layered on top of FBC state minimums:
For permitted metal work, inspectors typically verify the following at rough and final stages:

Six topics that help you understand what you're buying, why it's priced the way it is, and how to evaluate quality before the job starts.
Not all steel is the same. A36 mild steel, 304 stainless, 316L stainless, 6061-T6 aluminum, each has different properties, weldability, and corrosion resistance. Buying on price alone often leads to early failure or replacement.
The finish choice affects longevity more than material choice in many South Florida environments. A quality powder coat on mild steel dramatically outperforms a raw, unfinished surface in outdoor conditions, often within 12–18 months.
Our CrossFire XR plasma table cuts mild steel, stainless, and aluminum from DXF or DWG files. Understanding the process helps you spec correctly and avoid costly revisions.
A well-structured fabrication quote should break out material, labor, finish, and installation separately. Here's what each line item means and what to watch for.
Most buyers can't read a weld certificate. But you can visually identify acceptable vs. substandard welds before signing off, even without technical training.
One of the most common misunderstandings in metal fabrication is lead time. Custom work is not off-the-shelf. Here's what realistic lead times look like for our most common job types.
The questions we get asked most, organized by topic so you can find what you need fast.
There's no universal answer, it depends on material, complexity, finish, quantity, and whether installation is included. Rather than quote a generic figure, we give you an itemized written quote so you understand exactly what you're paying for. Call or submit a quote request for a number specific to your project.
No. Quotes are free. For simple projects we can often quote from photos and dimensions sent via email or WhatsApp. Complex projects or large commercial jobs may require a paid site visit for accurate measurement, which is credited back to the project if you move forward.
Common reasons: we include installation labor and hardware explicitly (some quotes exclude these), we specify the correct material grade for your environment (not the cheapest available), and we use American-sourced steel where applicable. We're happy to compare line-for-line if you share a competing quote.
In most cases, yes, but we need to verify the grade and certify it meets spec before incorporating it. We won't weld or fabricate with unknown-grade material for structural or code-required applications. We'll walk you through the process if this is your preference.
Simple parts (single handrail, gate, bracket set): 1–2 weeks. Mid-size residential or commercial jobs: 2–4 weeks. Fleet builds or structural steel: 4–10 weeks. Timelines depend on material availability, shop queue, and whether permits or engineering drawings are required. We'll give you a committed date at quote stage.
Occasionally. Rush availability depends on shop queue and material on hand. Rush jobs carry a surcharge (typically 20–35%). Call directly at (305) 409-0635 to check current availability before submitting an online request.
Changes mid-production are possible but may affect price and schedule. Minor changes (finish color, minor dimensions) are usually accommodated. Structural changes after cutting has begun typically require a change order. We document all approved specs before cutting begins to minimize this.
Mild steel (A36, A500), 304 stainless, 316/316L stainless, aluminum (6061-T6, 5052, 3003), and galvanized steel. We also work with perforated sheet, expanded metal, and tubing in round, square, and rectangular profiles. If you need a specific alloy, ask, we source broadly.
For steel: powder coat over sandblast prep, or hot-dip galvanizing for structural members near water. For coastal or marine environments: 316 stainless with a brushed or electropolished finish, or powder-coated aluminum. Raw or painted mild steel in direct saltwater exposure corrodes within 6–18 months regardless of paint quality.
Yes. Bring us a sample or a RAL/Pantone color code and we'll match via powder coat. For brushed stainless, we can match grit direction and pattern. Exact metallic or glitter finishes may have a minimum quantity for powder coat outsourcing.
Yes, it's one of our strongest specialties. South Florida's salt air and direct marine exposure require specific material and finish decisions that general fabricators often get wrong. We default to 316L stainless or marine-grade aluminum for anything within a quarter mile of the water and specify accordingly in our quotes.
Yes. We offer full supply-and-install for most project types in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County. We can also fabricate-only if you have your own install crew, we'll provide hardware specs and installation notes. Most residential and commercial clients prefer our full-service option.
We assist with the permitting process. For straightforward permit pulls (residential fencing, handrails), we handle the application. Complex structural or commercial permits may require a licensed engineer of record for drawings. We'll advise at quote stage whether a permit is likely required for your project type and municipality.
Yes. Fine Edge Industries LLC holds all required Florida contractor licenses for our scope of work and carries general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Certificates of insurance (COI) are available on request for GCs and commercial clients.
